Skyline Drive, Shenandoah Valley, Virginia

Shenandoah National Park (305 sq mi/790 sq km), N Va., extending 80 mi/129 km along crest of Blue Ridge; Skyline Drive, a N-S highway, extends for 105 mi/169 km through the park, continues as Blue Ridge Parkway from S end of park to Great Smoky Mts. Natl. Park (N.C.-Tenn.). Blue Ridge, Shenandoah Valley, Massanutten Mt., and Allegheny Mts. can be viewed from 75 overlooks on the drive. Park elevations range from 595 ft/181 m at Front Royal to 4,049 ft/1,234 m at the top of Hawksbill Mt. Heavily forested, the park contains a series of ridges and valleys, hollows, small hills, numerous streams, waterfalls, and trout-filled pools. The Appalachian Trail follows the crest. Accommodations at Skyland Lodge and Big Meadows Lodge. Est. 1935.
